1) While the term Sephardi is often used to categorize all Jews who came from the Middle East/Moslem world, the term is not really accurate. Many of these communities have little or no connection historically with the Jews of Spain i.e. Persian Jews, Yemenite Jews etc. Though Jews continued preeminent in financial and cultural circles this demonstrated the insecurity of that prominence. Like French Jews using French, Italian Jews using Italian, Jews in Moslem Spain used Arabic as the spoken vernacular and often wrote it with Hebrew letters. Maimonides, Ibn Gabirol, ibn Ezra, etc. all wrote in Arabic.
